She sat by the sea. It was about midday, and the sun was high in the cloudless, blue sky. The sand was grainy, and sitting in it wasn't comfortable. Lexi didn't mind. Comfort was something about which she did not care. This was why, when the cold wind came, she did not shiver, but merely sighed and continued to gaze out into the ocean. Maybe on a day long ago, she would have gotten up and walked away, but she didn't walk away from much anymore. Only other people.
Solitude was, per say, her forte. Without her reputation as a loner, she was nothing. To herself, she was nothing, but she did not mind. She didn't mind if she was nothing to others, and merely not exist. However, she knew that if she was not a loner, she would be around other people, and therefore exist. These confusing thoughts did not enter her mind often, as she liked to keep her thoughts organized and simple. Lexi cleared her mind and instead began to think about the waves.
The waves that crashed down so violently on the shore seemed to contradict themselves. They had a pattern, that sometimes lulled Lexi into a dream-state. Their color also had a calming affect. The cool turquoise that colored the water seemed so tranquil in contrast to the crashing. Even the scent made Lexi want to curl up on the shore and fall asleep. But the motion, the changing rise and fall, the churning seawater that was far more dangerous than it appeared, seemed so out of character.
After hours of sitting and contemplating the waves, Lexi noticed the sky begin to darken. She rose and silently strode away from the waves. After she was out of sight of the shore, she leaned against a tree. The rough bark scratched at her bare arms, and the crashing of the waves still sounded in her ears. Could somebody else hear it, she wondered. It would ruin her sense of solitude, but she was reassured by the thought that she was not completely nonexistent. Even if that was what she was trying to accomplish. I should come here more often, she thought with a small smile.

It was while he was so occupied that another figure appeared in the corner of his neon green eye. He turned, quickly appraising his companion; a girl, slender of frame and short; reminiscent of his longtime friend, also with blonde hair, although the mystery girl's was lighter, and she was wearing a flowing tank top and jean-shorts. After a short pause, Sol called amiably, "It's nice here, isn't it?"

'It's nice here, isn't it?' Lexi tensed up, and turned only her head to face her unwanted companion. Her eyes focused on someone she recognized from school. She had never talked to him before. Not that she had talked to many people in her school, but all the same, if she had it had not been him. She thought for a minute, but could not come up with his name. Interacting with him for too long could be dangerous, and she didn't want to shift in front of him.
'Yes,' Lexi replied quietly. Maybe she had just come to the realization that being nonexistent wasn't the answer to all her problems. That didn't mean she was going to become a social butterfly, but maybe a short chat with this mysterious classmate wouldn't do any harm. But she still couldn't think of his name.

Peaceful, I guess." His phone buzzed in his jeans. Two more texts from Ptolemy. He sighed, tapped out a reply, and relaxed, stretching out on the sand, just for a few seconds of peace. Absently, he looked at the sky. There was a little while left in the day, enough to afford to spare a few minutes relaxing.

Lexi leaned against the tree in companionable silence. She heard his phone vibrate occasionally. Lexi had a phone, and, although she brought it everywhere, she never used it. Nobody texted her or called her. Not even her parents, who didn't really care about where she was.
When and if she used her phone, she took pictures. Not of anything in particular, just to remember places she'd been. Thinking that she would want to remember this place, she took out her small phone and took a picture of the scattered trees in the distance and the sparse grass that later became completely sand. It wasn't especially beautiful, but it was a place where she had had a companion.
Said companion seemed to be somewhat worried about nightfall as well. Perhaps he was a shifter too? She didn't want to ask and have him not be, so she figured she would ask him his name instead. Then maybe she would think of some question that would seem obvious to a shifter, but not to anyone else. So, Lexi quietly questioned him 'What's your name?'

And you are...?" While waiting for a response, Sol glanced around at the waves lapping tranquilly against the sand and smiled, quickly capturing a picture with his buzzing phone.
